Teachers

Hanif Hekima, RYT 

Hanif was born in Louisville, Kentucky and began practicing Raja Yoga in 1973.  He began the study and practice of Hatha Yoga in 1976.  Hanif received a BA in Fine Arts at the University of Louisville in 1990.  He moved to Houston in 1993. 

Among the great teachers that he has studied and practiced with are John Flodstrom, Dennis Sparks and Maggie Kimbel-Sparks in Lousiville (Students of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and teachers of TheTranscendental Meditation Program).  In Houston he studied with Kathryn Bumbaugh (Yoga Hmmm), and Lex Gillan (Yoga Institute National Teacher Certification, 1998).  Hanif is currently registered with Yoga Alliance and a member of the Yoga Association of Houston.  Believing that all teachers must continue their studies, he is taking on-going Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Lex, Stan Hafner, and Johanna Sullivan at Austin Yoga Shala in Austin, Texas.

 

 

Shirley King, RYT 

 

Shirley was born in Houston, Texas and began her studies and practice of yoga in January, 2003.  She was certified in 2005 (Yoga Institute National Teacher Certification) and is registered with Yoga Alliance (200 Hr).  She currently studies with Hanif Hekima and Stan Hafner (Austin Yoga Shala) and taking on-going Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Lex Gillian, Stan Hafner, and Johanna Sullivan.

 

 

 

Monica Howell

Monica Howell was born in Pensacola, Florida.  She started practicing yoga in 1995.  After moving to Red Wood City, California in 2000, she taught Hatha Yoga at the Sequoia Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment.  She also taught Power Yoga and Cardio Kick-Boxing at local fitness clubs.  After moving to Houston in 2005, she received her Yoga Institute National Teacher Certification from Lex Gillan in October 2007.
